Markus Huemer

Baffling titles featuring curious statements or terms from the worlds of science and computing only appear to relate to the actual artwork, and confront the viewer with cultural, scientific and social discourses. The publication ‘I Greet My Father, My Mother and, Above All, My Parents’ (Distanz Verlag, 2024) focuses on Markus Huemer’s observations of nature, which play on the tension between art history and the natural sciences. His works have recently been exhibited at venues including the X-Vitamin Gallery, Belgrade, in 2024; the Galerie Philipp von Rosen, Cologne, in 2023; the Schlossmuseum Linz, in 2023; and the Ileana Tounta Contemporary Art Centre, Athens, in 2023. His works are held in numerous private and public collections, including the Daimler Contemporary Collection, Berlin; the City of Cologne Collection; the ZKM Karlsruhe; and the Collection of the Federal Republic of Germany, Bonn.
His current solo exhibition, ‘A football pitch must be free of trees’, is on display at the Neue Galerie Graz (in the Joanneumsviertel) until 30 August 2026. The exhibition comprises around 80 paintings from the past 25 years, bringing together the key bodies of work in Markus Huemer’s depictions of nature. The exhibition is accompanied by a comprehensive catalogue (Distanz Verlag), in which this aspect of the artist’s oeuvre is to be presented in detail for the first time in its entirety.
